Manchester United Vs Zorya Luhansk
Thursday 29th September 20:05
Thursday night sees Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United play their first home European football of the season, against Ukrainian minnows Zorya Luhansk.
United, having seemingly overcome their recent dip in form, should have no struggle in turning over their opponents; however the visitors will be out to prove their worth in only their second European campaign in 93 years. Equalling their second best league season ever in 2015/16, the east Ukrainian club are in high spirits having won the last 2 league games, as well as securing an impressive home draw against Fenerbache on match day 1 in the Europa League. This draw left many surprised, more so because it left Manchester United bottom of Group A after a poor display in Rotterdam that saw them succumb to a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Feyenoord.
Saturday’s first half demolition of PL Champions Leicester will have put a spring in the steps of United’s players and fans alike, and a comfortable-looking home fixture against such an unknown side gives them the perfect opportunity to pick up a run of form going into what promises to be a strenuous October.
Mourinho may use this game to experiment with a few players on the periphery of the first team. I would expect Memphis Depay to be awarded his first start under the new manager, alongside summer signing Henrikh Mkhitaryan who has sat the last few games out through injury.
Zorya Luhansk will be hoping for a similar evening to that of two weeks ago, they succeeded in frustrating Robin Van Persie and Fenerbache and were unlucky to concede a 96th minute equaliser after Dmytro Grechyshkin’s superb long range strike had put them 1-0 up.
United fans have reason to be confident ahead of Thursday’s encounter, but the Luhansk’ ‘nothing to lose’ mentality could see them turn heads at the Theatre of Dreams.
